Description: Merafloxacin (CI-934; CI934; CI 934), an antibacterial belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, is a novel and potent −1 PRF (programmed -1 ribosomal frameshifting) inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). It inhibits −1 PRF of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, as well as that of other beta coronaviruses. Inhibition of −1 PRF by merafloxacin impeded SARS-CoV-2 replication in Vero E6 cells, indicating that merafloxacin represents a promising lead compound for the development of a novel class of PRF-targeting antivirals.
